'Hamlet' takes top META prizes
Link between Indian theatre and film increasingNEW DELHI -- “Hamlet: The Clown Prince” won best play and best director for Rajat Kapoor at the Fourth Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards Friday night.
Other winners included a best actor nod for Atul Kumar for “Hamlet” while Laxmi Rawat won best actress for the romantic drama “Layla Majnun” which also bagged a best script nod for writers Ismail Choonara and Sabir Irshad Usmani.
Director Hidaayat Sami -- whose comedy “All About Women” bagged multiple nominations for its all-female cast including best play -- said that “there is immense acting talent in India which doesn’t get the showcase it deserves given the formulaic nature of the film business.”
However the theatre-film connection is strengthening, with a notable example being this year’s comedy film “The President Is Coming,” directed by Kunaal Roy Kapur and adapted from his play of the same name. Leading Bollywood producer Rohan Sippy (“Chandni Chowk To China”) produced the film.
Similarly, Sami said he is scripting a film version of “Women,” featuring the play’s ensemble cast.
