Hannah John-Kamen Lands Lead in Space, Syfy 'Killjoys' Drama
TORONTO - British actress Hannah John-Kamen, the star of London's West End musical Viva Forever, has landed the plum lead role in the Space and Syfy series Killjoys, from Orphan Black producer Temple Street Productions.
The 10-episode Canadian drama will also star Aaron Ashmore and Luke Macfarlane.
John-Kamen will play the lead role of Dutch, a top-level Killjoy, or interplanetary bounty hunter, chasing deadly warrants throughout the Quad, a distant planetary system.
Also playing killjoys are Ashmore, who takes on the role of John Jaqobis, a peacemaker who hates conflict; and Macfarlane, who played Scotty Wandell on Brothers and Sisters and in the Space and Syfy drama stars as D’avin, a handsome, rugged, sarcastic and incredibly loyal former soldier.
"Hannah, Aaron, and Luke are the perfect combination to lead this exciting new drama series,” said Corrie Coe, senior vp independent production at Space parent Bell Media, in a statement Tuesday.
Bill McGoldrick, executive vp of original content at Syfy, also pointed to the trio as "talented young actors" joining the Killjoys creative team.
The cross-border co-venture was created by showrunner Michelle Lovretta (Lost Girl). It will start production in Toronto on Aug. 5, with Chris Grismer (Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars) directing.
Space and Syfy are set to debut Killjoys in 2015.
Killjoys is executive produced by Lovretta, David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg of Temple Street Productions.
Karen Troubetzkoy is producing, while the writers room includes Jeremy Boxen, who is also a consulting producer, Aaron Martin, Emily Andras and Adam Barken.
Universal Cable Productions is distributing the series worldwide.
