Cannes 2012: Hanway Select Reports Brisk Documentary Business

"Woody Allen: A Documentary" is among the upscale offerings flying off the British sales banner's bespoke specialty sales shelves.

CANNES -- Hanway Select, the bespoke specialty movie division of HanWay Films, has sealed a slew of deals on its upscale doc offerings.

Woody Allen: A Documentary, unspooling in Cannes Classics, has inked deals with Memento (France), Versus (Spain), Soda (U.K.), Agora (Switzerland), Yota Play (Russia), PolarStar (Latin America), Versus Entertainment (Spain) and Cinema Rise (Japan).

The feature-length documentary about the legendary funny filmmaker will be released in cinemas in France on May 30, followed by the U.K. in June, Germany in July with rest of the world rolling out over the summer.

The Hanway imprint has also sold Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir, also unspooling in official selection as a special screening across the globe.

The movie, which unspooled late last year in Zurich, sold to Shock (Australia), Edko Films (Hong Kong), PolarStar (Latin America).

Pathe is releasing in France, Lucky Red in Italy, Studio Babelsberg in Germany with those three territories handled directly by Jeff Berg and Andrew Braunsberg.

Anton Corbijn: Inside Out also whipped up interest with Shock (Australia) and Edko Films (Hong Kong) taking the film.

The film is currently playing in cinemas in Benelux through A-Film and in Germany through Capelight.

Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel, released in the U.S. by Samuel Goldwyn in September last year, went to Feltrinelli (Italy) and Edko Films (Hong Kong).

And Mark Cousins’ The Story of Film: An Odyssey sold to Music Box (USA), Praesens Film (Switzerland), Edko Films (Hong Kong), Film Europe (Czech Republic), Canal22 (Mexico), SVT (Sweden), YLE (Finland) and NRK (Norway).

The film is currently on release theatrically in the U.K. with live Q&As across the country, and will roll out across Europe and U.S. in fall.
