Haute Joaillerie: The Hottest Jewels to Take Over the Red Carpet

If you have to ask what it is, you probably can't afford it.

Designed with private high-net-worth clients in mind — think royalty and moguls — haute joaillerie, or high jewelry, of late has been enhancing its allure, not to mention earning its price tags, by dazzling at premier Hollywood events. (With the Cannes red carpet about to kick off, look for festival sponsor Chopard to impress by adorning A-listers in pieces like its ruby chandelier earrings, made with 46.52 carats of pear-shaped rubies and 9.13 carats of diamonds.)

Naomi Watts at this year's Golden Globes donned Bulgari's all-diamond version of its Serpenti necklace, inspiring an unnamed client to purchase one in rose gold. Cate Blanchett's black Maison Margiela Oscar gown merely was a backdrop for the debut of a $400,000 Tiffany & Co. platinum-set turquoise, aquamarine and diamond necklace. Says design director Francesca Amfitheatrof, "I combined diamonds and gemstones in organic settings that suggest pebbles washed and marked by the sea." Released once a year — typically during Paris' couture week in July — high jewelry represents a house's ultimate technical prowess and DNA, so it's no accident the turquoise in Blanchett's necklace matches the iconic Tiffany shade of blue.

Dior Joaillerie creative director Victoire de Castellane based the shape of a diamond-emerald cuff on the label's legendary 1947 Bar jacket. With Jessica Chastain named Piaget ambassador in January, the house's haute joaillerie is sure to round out her red-carpet looks in 2015: "It's the perfect finishing touch, that extra something special," Chastain tells THR. "I love the legacy of the brand, worn by Frank SinatraJackie Kennedy and Andy Warhol, to name a few."
