HBO Asia goes HD in October

Singapore, Philippines and Hong Kong get service first

HONG KONG – HBO Asia will unroll its Hollywood movie channel in high definition from October.

The service, which will have content and scheduling identical to the standard definition Asian version of the channel, will debut on Singapore's StarHub and The Philippines' Cignal platform on Thursday. It will follow in Hong Kong on PCCW's NowTV IPTV platform on Oct 6.

"HBO is proud to be the first regional movie channel to broadcast in high definition in Asia," said Jonathan Spink, CEO of HBO Asia. "We are offering it as a no-extra charge value-add to existing subscribers of the HBO pack.

"High definition is just a matter of time everywhere and we are looking at all our other markets including Malaysia and India. We are starting out with a single HD channel that is a mirror of the HBO Asia channel. Multiplexing in HD is largely a question of capacity (at the platforms)."

PCCW's TV and New Media managing director Dominic Leung said that more than 90% of Hong Kong households can access HD services. The HBO in HD launch gives NowTV eight HD channels.
