HBO Marketing Exec Courteney Monroe to Step Down

Monroe spearheaded campaigns for "Game of Thrones" and "The Sopranos" and oversaw the launch of the HBO GO App.

HBO marketing exec Courteney Monroe -- who oversaw the campaigns for everything from The Sopranos to Game of Thrones -- will step down by year's end,  a rep for the network confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.

Monroe, whose official title is executive VP of consumer marketing and digital platforms, also oversaw the HBO GO iPad App, which allows users to stream shows.

She has traveling between New York and Washington, D.C. since her husband relocated there for work about a year and a half ago. "From a family perspective, from a personal perspective, the commute is challenging," Monroe, who has two children, told Ad Age, which first reported the news. She will seek a new job in D.C. in early 2012.

Monroe was instrumental in alternative marketing for HBO, which is often constrained by broadcast networks refusing to air their ads for because they compete. HBO has found success in digital and print ads that are complex, such as an eight-page insert in Vanity Fair to introduce Deadwood, or ads for the drink "Tru Blood," to promote True Blood, which appeared all over stores.

Monroe joined HBO in 1998 as manager of advertising, growing to senior VP of consumer marketing in 2006.

"This experience, both personally and professionally, will be very hard to replicate," she said.

As many of you may be aware, just over a year ago Courteney and her family moved to Washington, DC. Due to her strong passion, commitment and loyalty to HBO, Courteney has tried to make the long-distance commute work. Despite her extraordinary efforts, the time away from her family has been very hard. Therefore, Courteney has made the very difficult decision to leave HBO at the end of the year in order to pursue opportunities closer to home. I know Courteney did not come to this decision lightly, and as painful as it is to say goodbye, I completely understand and support her decision. Courteney has been a huge asset to this organization, and her departure will be a tremendous loss for HBO.

Having worked with Courteney for over 13 years, I can tell you that her full list of accomplishments are far too numerous to list here. Under her tenure, HBO has been the recipient of numerous marketing awards and our campaigns have continuously received accolades from the incredible array of talent that produce programming for the network. In addition, Courteney was also one of the key leaders responsible for the development and deployment of HBO GO. The strength of our brand and reputation of our consumer marketing reflects Courteney's creative instincts and unparalleled skills.

Among Courteney's greatest accomplishments is the world-class consumer marketing organization she has built. Her talented and creative team will ensure we continue to drive excellence in all our marketing efforts, and I look forward to working with them closely during the transition.
