The newcomer’s buzzy festival film is based on her own experiences as a homeless teen battling drug addiction

One year ago, Arielle Holmes was a 19-year-old girl addicted to heroin and living on the streets of New York City. Now, after her star turn in a film making waves on the festival circuit, she has signed with a major talent agency, ICM Partners.

Holmes met filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie (already repped by ICM) by accident, when the brothers spotted her entering the subway and approached her about appearing in the thriller they were working on. Those plans changed when they learned that Holmes was homeless and struggling with drug addiction and an equally destructive relationship. The Safdies commissioned Holmes to write down her experiences – the unpublished memoir Mad Love in New York City – and were inspired to adapt them as the drama Heaven Knows What, starring Holmes as a fictionalized version of herself.

The film has generated considerable interest and praise since its Venice premiere, making well-received stops at Toronto, Rio de Janeiro and Vancouver, and is set to screen at the New York Film Festival Thursday. Radius announced that it has picked up U.S. rights to the film and is planning to release it in the second quarter of 2015.
