Music maven Demme will direct Marley pic as Scorsese steps aside

Jonathan Demme has boarded the Tuff Gong Pictures/Shangri-La Entertainment Bob Marley documentary, replacing Martin Scorsese as director.

The backers said that Scorsese exited the project because of "scheduling conflicts."

Demme, who worked with Shangri-La on the docu "Neil Young: Heart of Gold," is boarding the project with the blessing of the Marley family, with son Ziggy Marley serving as an executive producer.

Tuff Gong and Shangri-La are producing.

The as-yet-untitled film is being targeted for a global release Feb. 6, 2010, the 65th anniversary of Marley's birth, the producers said. Fortissimo Films is the international sales agent.

Demme completed post on the Sony Pictures Classics release "Rachel Getting Married," based on Jenny Lumet's original screenplay. He is editing the concert film "Neil Young Trunk Show." (partialdiff)
