Liam Hemsworth has been cast as Miley Cyrus' love interest in "The Last Song," Disney's adaptation of the upcoming Nicholas Sparks novel.

Julie Anne Robinson is directing, and Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot's Offspring Entertainment are producing.

The story centers on a rebellious teenager (Cyrus) who is forced to spend the summer with the father who left her years earlier.

Hemsworth is playing a member of the local cool crowd, an awesome beach volleyball player with Ivy League dreams.

The studio is looking at a June 15 start date in Georgia.

Hemsworth, who hails from Australia, made his U.S debut in the Nicolas Cage starrer "Knowing." In Oz, he appeared in several televisions shows, including the family fantasy "The Elephant Princess" and the drama "Neighbours."

Hemsworth, who has no agent but is repped by management firm Roar, is part of an actor-filled brood: His two older brothers also are actors. Luke Hemsworth also appeared on "Neighbours," and Chris Hemsworth plays George Kirk in the new "Star Trek." (partialdiff)
