In Her Shoes: A Chat With Katherine Schwarzenegger
The lifestyle blogger, author and philanthropist opens up about her first big shoe splurge and her favorite holiday tradition.
Katherine Schwarzenegger has been steadily making a name for herself in the lifestyle world. She’s an InStyle video columnist with a well-loved series, #AskKat, has penned two best-selling books, has been a guest co-host on The View, is an avid blogger and is passionate about giving back.
We caught up with the 25-year-old in West Hollywood on Tuesday night at makeup and beauty lounge Blushington, which hosted an event to support Best Buddies International — the nonprofit founded by her uncle, Anthony Shriver, to create opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Amid the bubbly, Schwarzenegger gave us an inside look at her shoe world.
What is your favorite pair of shoes of all time and why?
My favorite pair of shoes, for sentimental reasons, would be my Miu Miu blue navy satin cap-toe platform Mary Jane pumps (above). They were the first fancy shoes I bought with my own money when I was 17. I was in Milan with my best friend, and I had been wanting them for a long time and saved up to buy them. It was such a great moment I will remember forever. I don’t wear them now because they aren't my style anymore, but I will keep them forever and love seeing them in my closet.
My favorite pair of shoes that I continue to wear today would be my white patent-leather Prada shoes I bought myself on my last book tour. They are so insanely comfortable and super chic. Most people feel weird about white heels, but I love them and wear them with everything, especially when I need to mix up an all-black outfit.
What are your go-to shoes for everyday?
My go-to shoes for everyday would probably have to be either my white Converse that I've had since high school or my black Alexander McQueen flats with the skull on the top. It depends on my day. If I am running around makeup-free, I usually go for my Converse, but if I'm trying to look presentable, I always go for my McQueens — they go with absolutely everything, and with the skull on the top, they are slightly edgy but subtle at the same time. They are also insanely comfortable, so they are easy and always a go-to for me.
Plus, the McQueen flats were given to me by my mother a few years ago for Christmas. She got herself a pair, along with my sister, so we all three have the matching black McQueen flats, which makes them special. My mom started a tradition that, every Christmas, she gets herself, my sister and I all the same pair of flats, so I look forward to that every year.
Favorite shoes for red-carpet events?
My go-to shoes for red-carpet events are usually always black, but I mix between my pointed stilettos and platform heels. The last pair of shoes I wore to a red-carpet event were Kurt Geiger platform strappy heels. I got them a while ago, but they seem to go with everything I wear — especially when I wear tights — they always work. They are also super comfortable, so I love that part.
When I am traveling, I always either bring those or my Schutz black pointed heels. They are super sleek and sexy and go with everything I wear. I can also last a really long time in them, which is always great because there is nothing that puts me in a worse mood than being in pain in my shoes.
If you could walk in anyone's shoes for a day, who would that be?
I would 100 percent say Beyonce. I would love to walk in her shoes for the day and see what it would be like. I've admired her for a really long time, and her shoe game is always really on point, so that's a plus too. I'd also love to know how she dances in those heels, so I just think I would learn a lot!
