'Harry Potter's' Hermione Granger Voted Best Film Role Model in U.K. Survey
Kids polled by DVD rental and streaming firm LoveFilm also mentioned characters from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Home Alone" and "Toy Story."
School-age movie fans in the U.K. have voted Harry Potter friend Hermione Granger the best film role model ahead of the protagonist from Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
British TV network ITV on Monday reported the results of the survey of 1,000 school children by streaming video and DVD rental firm LoveFilm and children's charity Filmclub.
The smart and hard-studying Granger, played in the Potter film series by Emma Watson, drew 19 percent of the votes. Charlie Bucket, the boy who wins a ticket to visit Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, got 16 percent.
Fellow Roald Dahl creation Matilda Wormwood, the protagonist of Matilda, was the selection of 15 percent of kids surveyed, followed by the 13 percent who voted for Kevin from Home Alone, portrayed by Macauley Culkin.
Also in the top 10 were such characters as Dre Parker, played by Jaden Smith, from the rebooted Karate Kid (12 percent), animated toy cowboy Woody from Toy Story (11 percent), voiced by Tom Hanks, and Chihiro Ogino from Spirited Away (4 percent).
Said Filmclub: "Films can have a powerful influence on the way children behave and interact with people around them. Characters that young people identify with tend to stay with them the longest, and positive behaviors can be learnt by watching the way that fictional characters handle certain situations on-screen."
