HFPA considers crowded field for 65th awards

Empty

Sixty-one foreign language films -- including Miramax's "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," DreamWorks/Paramount Classics' "The Kite Runner" and Focus Features' "Lust, Caution" -- have qualified in the category for the 65th annual Golden Globe Awards.

Under current Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. rules, that mean those high-profile titles can not be considered in the best picture category, which has been reserved for English-language movies. Although the HFPA has revised that rule to open the group's two best picture categories up to non-English language movies, the new rule doesn't take affect until next year. (HR 11/1)

The Globes will also consider Sony Classics' animated "Persepolis" in its foreign language race. But unlike the Oscar race, where "Persepolis" is both France's entry in the best foreign language film category and has also qualified for best animated feature, the Globes is not including "Perspepolis" among its animated possibilities.

Other films that will joust for best foreign-language honors include Romania's "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," Austrai's "The Counterfeiters," France's "La Vie en Rose," Spain's "The Orphanage," and Korea's "Secret Sunshine."

Nominations will be announced Dec. 13, and the Globes will be awarded on Jan. 13.
