Hiatus picks up 'Incendies,' 'Prime Numbers' for Taiwan

New Taipei-based co. focusing on festival award winners

BEIJING – Hiatus Media bought Taiwan rights to director Denis Villeneuve's “Incendies” and Saverio Constanzo's “The Solitude of Prime Numbers” at the Pusan International Film Festival last week, executives of the new, Taipei-based company said Monday.

Han Sun and Kelly Olson of Hiatus struck the deals with Entertainment One's Anick Poirier and Le Pacte's Nathalie Jeung, Hiatus said in a statement.

“Incendies,” the story of twins on a journey to the Middle East in search of their tangled roots, has picked up festival awards around the world and is considered a frontrunner in the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards.

“The Solitude of Prime Numbers” has done well at the box office in Italy and the book on which it’s based has been a bestseller in Taiwan. “We believe the film will be as well," Sun said.

Hiatus’ inaugural lineup also includes the 2010 Cannes Palme d'Or winner “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives,” from Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Mathieu Amalric's 2010 Cannes Best Director winner “On Tour,” and “I Am Love,” starring Tilda Swinton.
