High five for 'Borat' globally

Cohen comedy No. 1 for second week; 'Season' No. 2

Fictional Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev, a.k.a. British comic Sacha Baron Cohen, scooped an estimated $15 million overseas as "Borat" finished No. 1 internationally for the second weekend in a row.

The gross tally from the satirical comedy's 20 territories (up three from last weekend) and 1,135 screens (an increase of 140 prints) was a benign 20% drop from its smash opening weekend (anything under a 45% decline is considered positive). Total overseas boxoffice to date stands at $43 million. Worldwide cume is $111 million.

"Borat, opened strongly in Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia with Greece, providing a nearly $16,900 per-screen average (an estimated $287,000 taken from just 17 locations).

The 20th Century Fox International release finished No. 1 in the holdover markets of the U.K., Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden, and beat its opening weekend gross tallies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The biggest of the international markets by far remains the U.K., where "Borat" scored a weekend tally of an estimated $8.3 million, down just 18% from the opening weekend, from 429 screens. U.K. market cume is a mighty $27 million.

Finishing No. 2 this weekend was Sony Pictures Releasing International's "Open Season," which played 4,665 screens in 50 territories -- its widest exposure overseas to date -- for an estimated $8.8 million.

The animation title opened in the second spot in Spain, yielding an estimated $1.8 million from 405 situations. In Germany, "Open Season" bowed at No. 3 with an estimated $1.6 million from 757 screens. Total international gross stands at $63.1 million; worldwide, $144 million.

In the third spot is another Fox release, "The Devil Wears Prada," which high-stepped its way to an estimated $7.5 million from 3,500 screens in 45 markets. The international total for the behind-the-scenes look at the high-fashion world stands at $163 million, some $38 million more than the Meryl Streep-Anne Hathaway starrer has grossed so far in the U.S.

Finishing fourth is Warner Bros. International's "The Departed," which muscled its way to an estimated $7.1 million from 2,153 screens in 37 territories. The international cume for the Martin Scorsese crime drama stands at $58.7 million.

The No. 5 title this weekend is Lionsgate's "Saw III," which ignited the Spain market with a No. 1 opening tally of an estimated $3.1 million from 300 screens, exceeding the combined gross of the market's No. 2 and No. 3 titles. The third in the grisly horror series was distributed by Buena Vista International in Spain plus four Latin American markets for an estimated $4 million in those territories.

Overall, "Saw III" played 14 territories over the weekend, yielding an estimated $5.5 million from 1,500 screens. The overseas cume stands at $24.4 million, while the worldwide tally is $94.3 million.

Fox's "A Good Year," starring Russell Crowe as an investment banker who inherits a vineyard in Provence, France, finally got some overseas traction this weekend with an estimated $4.9 million harvested from 1,600 screens in 19 markets. Overseas total now stands at $8.1 million.

The comedy-drama directed by Ridley Scott bowed No. 4 in Germany (an estimated $1.15 million from 351 sites), No. 3 in Australia ($983,000 from 287 locations) and No. 1 in Taiwan ($193,000 from 68 situations). Its second weekend in Spain resulted in an estimated $1 million from 300 screens, a drop of only 21% from the weekend before.

The biggest single market attraction by far remains the Japanese-language "Desu noto 2" (Death Note: The Last Name), which WBI co-produced and is releasing in Japan. The weekend estimate is $4.7 million from 346 situations, ranking No. 1 in this all-important market. "Death Note's" overseas total now stands at $19.4 million.

WBI's "The Prestige" bagged a reasonably magical $4.2 million from 972 situations in 18 markets, raising its overseas total to $11.5 million. "Babel" bowed No. 1 in Mexico, garnering an estimated $1.7 million from 292 screens, the sixth-biggest drama bow ever in the market, as per distributor United International Pictures.

Universal/UIP's German-language "Seven Dwarfs 2" finished No. 2 in Germany and first in Austria over the weekend for an overall tally of $3.7 million from 918 screens in its third weekend in four markets (German-speaking Switzerland and Luxembourg in addition to Germany and Austria). The international cume for this family film is $23.2 million.

Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers" continues a tough international slog. The WBI release fought its way to just $2.7 on the weekend at 1,353 prints in 11 markets. The film's international total to date stands at $13.5 million.

UIP's "Jackass Number 2" opened No. 1 in Australia (an estimated $1.8 million from 187 screens), grossing an estimated $2.2 million overall from 396 screens in 10 territories. Overseas cume stands at $5 million; worldwide, $77.4 million.

In Spain, WBI's local unit released Saul Zaentz's production of "Los Fantasmas De Goya" (Goya's Ghost), directed by Milos Forman and toplined by Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman. The opening tally was an estimated $700,000 from 362 screens.

Other overseas cume updates: WBI's "Pan's Labyrinth," $11.6 million; UIP's "Flushed Away," $6.4 million (thanks to a $1.8 million weekend at 492 screens in six territories); Universal/UIP's "Children of Men," $20.3 million; Paramount/UIP's "World Trade Center," $85 million; Paramount/Nickelodeon's "The Barnyard," $24.3 million (thanks to a $1.6 million weekend from 1,576 screens in 23 markets); Paramount/UIP's "An Inconvenient Truth," $11.9 million; Universal/UIP's "You, Me, and Dupree," $50.2 million; and Summit Entertainment/Universal's "Step Up," 13.9 million (for Universal's five territories only).
