Hillary Clinton Mingles With Hollywood Heavyweights at Haim Saban's McAuliffe Fundraiser
Hillary Clinton headlined a Terry McAuliffe fundraiser at Haim and Cheryl Saban's Beverly Hills compound on Wednesday that looked a lot like a low-key run-through for presidential fundraisers to come.
While the event was ostensibly for McAuliffe's Virginia gubernatorial campaign, attendees said the afternoon luncheon felt like a Clintonite reunion -- with an undercurrent of anticipation that the former secretary of state could make another run for the White House in 2016.
Among those at the fundraiser (with tickets starting at $15,000 per person) were longtime Clinton loyalist Casey Wasserman and his wife, Laura, studio head Harvey Weinstein, Ted Danson, Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos and wife Nicole Avant, political strategist Adam Schiff, and former Los Angeles controller and mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel.
Traveling with Clinton was longtime aide Huma Abedin, wife of ex-U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner. Clinton told the group of about 80 people that it was nice to see old friends, said one person at the event.
In the absence of McAuliffe, whose campaign is in its final stretch, Clinton told a few funny stories about her husband's old friend, evoking a series of laughs from an appreciative Weinstein. During the luncheon, Clinton, who earlier circulated for photos and personal greetings, was seated between Cheryl Saban and Sarandos.
The former secretary of state was set to attend a dinner gala Thursday evening for the Danson-supported environmental group Oceana at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Weinstein is expected to introduce Clinton. HBO CEO Richard Plepler also is being honored.
