DEATHS

Director John Rich, who won Emmys for The Dick Van Dyke Show and All in the Family and was a key figure in DGA history, died Jan. 29 of heart failure in Los Angeles. He was 86.

Nicol Williamson, who starred as Sherlock Holmes in 1976's The Seven-Per-Cent Solution and as Merlin in the 1981 film Excalibur, died of esophageal cancer, his son said Jan. 25. He was 75.

Theo Angelopoulos, an acclaimed Greek director whose Eternity and a Day won the 1998 Palme d'Or, died Jan. 24 after he was struck by a motorbike during filming of his latest feature outside Athens. He was 76.

Robert Hegyes, who played Juan Epstein on the ABC series Welcome Back, Kotter, died of a heart attack Jan. 26 in Edison, N.J. He was 60.
