'Hogs,' 'Holiday' in o'seas tussle
EmptyPreliminary estimates place Buena Vista International's "Wild Hogs" as the No. 1 film internationally for the weekend, but the film is in a dogfight with Universal International's "Mr. Bean's Holiday."
Early weekend estimates for the latest frame had "Hogs" on top, but "Holiday" might yet wind up first in the overseas pack.
"Hogs" grossed an esitmated $7.2 million from 3,200 screens in 37 territories, raising its overseas boxoffice total to $55 million. "Holiday," which narrowly wound up as the previous weekend's No. 1 title after all figures were calculated.
The Rowan Atkinson slapstick comedy pulled an estimated $7.1 million from 3,950 screens in 50 territories, according to figures provided by Universal International.
"There is a good chance that 'Holiday' will be a bit higher, like $7.2 million or $7.3 million," the distributor said. "France is the big question because we are not distributing it there. So we have limited information until (todayMonday)." Local distributor Studio Canal is handling "Holiday" in France.
"Holiday's" international gross total is $156.1 million, $40.2 million of which comes from the U.K. over 31 days, putting it ahead of the total U.K. grosses of earlier Atkinson comedy hits, 2003's "Johnny English" and 1997's "Bean."
For the second weekend in a row, "Hogs" maintained its top position in the market of German-speaking Europe. In its eighth weekend in Australia, the suburban biker comedy's market cume stands at $13.1 million, nearly 25% of its international total to date.
Overall for the weekend, the last one before the summer blockbusters break loose, boxoffice was soft. That will change this week, when Sony's "Spider-Man 3" bows TuesdayMay 1 in at least 16 markets including France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Korea. Its predecessor, 2004's "Spider-Man 2," grossed $410.5 million overseas.
DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures International begins its overseas rollout of "Shrek the Third" on May 17 in Russia and the Ukraine. "Shrek 2" finished with an international boxoffice of $478 million in 2004.
On May 25, Buena Vista International debuts "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" worldwide. Last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" registered $641.9 million overseas, making it the top-grossing title of 2006 internationally and the fourth-biggest foreign title ever.
At No. 3 for the current weekend was PPI's "Shooter," which gunned down an estimated $6 million from 2,185 situations in 56 markets. The Mark Wahlberg action vehicle bowed in South Korea with an estimated $947,000 from 146 screens.
In fourth place was Sony Pictures Releasing International's release of Revolution Studios' "Perfect Stranger," which yielded an estimated $5.2 million from 2,955 screens in 53 territories. The overseas cume for the psychological melodrama with Halle Berry and Bruce Willis is $29.5 million.
Finishing in fifth place was Warner Bros. International's "The Reaping," a horror item starring Hilary Swank, which grossed an estimated $4.1 million from about 2,500 screens in 47 territories. The thriller's cume stands at $26.9 million.
The biggest opener overseas was Initial Entertainment Group/Revolution Studios' "Next," director Lee Tamahori's sci-fi thriller with Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore and Jessica Biel, which bowed in the No. 3 spot domestically for the frame. Preliminary overseas numbers put "Next's" tally at an estimated $4 million from about 15 markets. In the U.K., the film is being distributed by Entertainment Film Distributors, battling "Hogs" for the No. 1 market spot, grossing an estimated $1.5 million from 358 locations.
Also in the U.K., PPI released "Reno 911: Miami," an action comedy about madcap cops battling terrorists in Miami Beach, to an estimated $240,000 from 136 screens. Fox is handling the title in the U.S.
WBI's "300" is winding down its overseas run with an estimated $3.9 million from about 3,600 situations in 56 markets for an international total of $224 million. 20th Century Fox's "Sunshine" beamed up an estimated $2.5 million from 2,500 situations in 47 markets for a cume of $21 million.
BVI's "Meet the Robinsons," with plenty of markets yet to play, pushed its cume to $45.4 million with an estimated $2.3 million weekend at 3,000 screens in 42 territories. Fox's "Epic Movie" opened at No. 1 in Italy ($1.6 million from 250 sites) and pushed its overseas cume to $39.2 million.
Other overseas cume updates: DreamWorks/PPI's "Disturbia," $6.3 million (thanks to a $2 million weekend from 830 screens in eight markets); WBI's "Music and Lyrics," $88.3 million; Fox's "Night at the Museum," $320.2 million; PPI's "Norbit," $61 million; Fox's "Rocky Balboa," $81 million; Universal's "Hot Fuzz," $49 million; WBI's "Mio Fratello e Figlio Unico," $4.9 million after two weeks of Italy playtime; Sony's "Stomp the Yard," $6 million; and Universal's "Curse of the Golden Flower," $2.4 million (Universal markets only) and "The Good Shepherd," $18.2 million (Universal markets only).
