On July 11, 1922, the Hollywood Bowl kicked off its inaugural summer season with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and has been one of L.A.'s most glamorous summer hangouts ever since.
THROUGH THE YEARS
♦ Four years after the Hollywood Bowl's first performance, the firm Allied Architects was hired to renovate the amphitheater, building the Bowl's first shell and permanent audience seating.
♦ Actors Jack Haley, Mickey Rooney and Lucille Ball shared a laugh backstage during a 1946 concert.
♦ Oscar-winning actress Celeste Holm posed at the top of the garden box seats during a 1950 photo shoot.
♦ Pianist and conductor Jose Iturbi joined Frank Sinatra (a Hollywood Bowl repeat performer) for a soda in a backstage dressing room before the singer's concert on Aug. 14, 1943.
♦ The legendary Charlie Chaplin (with his fourth wife, Oona O'Neill) was a devoted music lover and retained season tickets to the L.A. Philharmonic's summer sessions for more than three decades.
♦ Comedian Danny Thomas (with Marilyn Monroe) hosted a September 1953 concert at the Bowl to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Monroe was the evening's main attraction and performed a song from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
