“All right, all right, all right,” Matthew McConaughey drawled, commencing his acceptance speech for best actor at Monday's Hollywood Film Awards. “Those are the first words I ever did say on film and they’re always a good kick off for me.”

McConaughey has made great strides since his 1993 debut in Dazed and Confused but exhibited humility and gratefulness at the ceremony. The actor reminisced about former co-stars and directors who helped launch his career, including Richard Linklater.

In recent years, McConaughey has been more selective about the roles he opts to take. But with the support of his wife, Camila Alves, and agent, Jim Toth, he proceeded to “recalibrate” his career and immersed himself in projects that he felt connected to on a more substantive level.

Among those projects, The Wolf of Wall Street, out Nov. 15, and Dallas Buyers Club, out Nov. 1, were given special recognition. McConaughey described how he’s evolved in the last couple of years and how he’s been able to pursue more complex characters.

“I lost money for the first time,” he said, “but I did have a hell of a lot of fun.”
