The controversy over Paris Hilton's jail sentence is boosting her DVD sales. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment reports that during the past two weeks, sales of "A Simple Life" DVDs have risen 24%. Fox has four complete-season sets of the reality TV series, which co-stars Hilton and Nicole Richie. The latest, Season 4, was released in December.
Three weeks into its spring promotional campaign, the North American HD DVD Promotional Group reported that HD DVD players account for 60% of all dedicated high-def disc machines. The format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc has led to a price war between the camps, with Toshiba discounting its entry-level HD DVD player to an effective $299, after rebates. The cheapest Blu-ray player is a Panasonic model at $599, with a $499 Sony player coming in the summer.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is preparing a lavish 30th anniversary edition DVD of "Taxi Driver," the acclaimed drama from Martin Scorsese that stars Robert De Niro and a 12-year-old Jodie Foster. The two-disc "Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition" hits stores Aug. 14 and includes new bonus material like a newly recorded feature-length commentary from Scorsese.
Warner Home Video has set Oct. 9 as the DVD release date for the documentary "Brando," which aired in May on Turner Classic Movies. The film pieces together decades of Brando's film performances with never-before-scene footage and interviews with family members.
