Helen McCrory will star in the six-part 'Fearless' from Patrick Harbinson and Mammoth Screen.

With its big-budget royal period drama Victoria about to hit British screens, U.K. producer Mammoth Screen has lined up another major series with ITV.

Fearless, set to star Helen McCrory, comes from Homeland writer and executive producer Patrick Harbinson and is billed as a visceral political thriller. McCrory will play Emma Blunt, a solicitor known for defending lost causes, who suspects a man convicted for killing a schoolgirl was wrongfully imprisoned and is forced to battle dark forces from within the police and intelligence services.

"Fearless is a legal thriller," says Harbinson. "But one that's written in the crash zone where law and politics collide."

The series, which was commissioned by ITV's drama controller Victoria Fea, will be produced by Adrian Sturges (Houdini and Doyle, The Enfield Haunting, The Disappearance of Alice Creed) and exec produced by Mammoth’s managing director Damien Timmer (Victoria, Poldark, And Then There Were None), Tom Mullens (Endeavour, Black Work) and Harbinson. Developed by Mammoth’s creative director, Rebecca Keane, it will be directed by BAFTA winner Pete Travis (The Go-Between, Legacy, Omagh) and distributed internationally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

“When l was at drama school, l was inspired by Prime Suspect, watching as Britain led the way in creating strong female characters to lead their dramas," said McCrory. "l'm thrilled to be leading ITV's new drama -- it’s a thriller that starts deceptively small, then begins crossing borders to different cultures and continents. l knew and admired Patrick Harbinson’s writing for Homeland, and Pete Travis and l have worked together before -- that shorthand is so important on such a big project with ambitions running high."

Filming is set to begin in the U.K. in September.

Alongside Fearless and Victoria, which is set to air on PBS in January in the same slot as Downton Abbey, Mammoth also has Poldark on the BBC, recently renewed for season three, and the Agatha Christie adaptation The Witness for the Prosecution, starring Andrea Riseborough and Kim Cattrall, also for the BBC and now shooting in Liverpool.
