Akshay Kumar comedy takes over $10 mil at homeNEW DELHI -- Comedy caper “Housefull” from Eros International has brought much-needed cheer to the Indian boxoffice after it collected 480 million rupees ($10.6 million), with another 160 million rupees overseas during its opening weekend last Friday.
Starring top actor Akshay Kumar and actresses Lara Dutta and Deepika Padukone, the film is directed by Sajid Khan, who also scored a hit with his 2007 “Heyy Babyy."
The film opened shortly after the five-week Indian Premier League cricket season affected boxoffice attendance with the country glued to its TV screens. In addition, a spate of recent releases has performed below expectations.
“With its excellent weekend performance, the biggest of the year so far, “Housefull” has lived up to its name," Eros International Media senior VP distribution Nandu Ahuja said. In the U.K. the film landed at the 11th spot grossing £270,000 ($409 374) over the weekend.
