Howard Hughes Memorabilia to Benefit L.A. Youth

A variety of vintage posters, stills, autographs and other memorabilia from a private collection of movies by the late famed filmmaker and aviator Howard Hughes and his RKO Studios will be auctioned on Oct. 2 at the Promenade at, fittingly enough, the Howard Hughes Center in Los Angeles.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Youth Opportunities United, an organization focused towards providing scholarships, art education and other assistance for L.A. foster youth and children under court supervision. 

The collection belongs to Richard Holland, an engineer who worked for Hughes’ aircraft in the 1970s. This is the first auction event for the 20-year-old organization, which supports nearly 35,000 youth in Los Angeles County.

"My husband collected these items all throughout his life," said Mary Ledding, chairperson of Youth Opportunities United. "When he passed on, I said, 'Lets see what we can do for foster kids where all the money can go to art and scholarships.' "

Hall of Fame racehorse trainer Jack Van Burg will serve as the auctioneer of the professionally mounted and framed Old Hollywood possessions. The venue will be covered with many of the posters including examples from Hughes' noir films such as Scarface, Hell’s Angels and The Outlaw.

"It's a unique night of Hollywood history on display with four decades of movie content," said Ledding. "Every dollar will go to a real result in a foster child's life."

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. with the live auction beginning at 7:30 p.m.
