"It's going to be a big challenge to recognize that the world is shrinking, and people from different religions, different cultures, are going to have to learn to live with each other."

The shocking scope of the global refugee crisis is previewed in the trailer for Ai Weiwei's Human Flow, which debuted in honor of World Humanitarian Day.

The Participant Media and AC Films documentary from the world-renowned artist, activist and filmmaker captures the condition of today’s more than 65 million displaced individuals who fled their homes in search of new lives. It was filmed in 23 countries over the course of more than a year, and charts the desperate search for safety, shelter and justice, especially as these issues continue to play out heavily in the news cycle.

"It's going to be a big challenge to recognize that the world is shrinking," says one voice in the trailer, after harrowing snapshots of the crisis in Kenya, Iraq, Jordan, Turkey, Gaza and Northern Greece. "And people from different religions, different cultures, are going to have to learn to live with each other."

Amazon Studios will release Human Flow in select theaters on Oct. 13.
