Idris Elba on SAG Award Winners: "Welcome to Diverse TV"
The actor won two awards during the ceremony.
Idris Elba made note of the diversity among the SAG winners on Saturday night.
The actor claimed two wins during the evening, for his roles in TV series Luther and in Netflix's movie Beasts of No Nation. Queen Latifah, Uzo Aduba and Viola Davis also claimed early wins.
While presenting, Elba drew drew attention to the winners. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to diverse TV," he said.
The awards show was held following weeks of controversy stemming from all white nominees being announced in the Oscars acting categories for the second year in a row.
Elba won twice, once for outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role and for best performance by an actor in a TV movie or miniseries; Aduba won for outstanding performance by a female actress in a comedy series, Latifah won for best performance by an actress in a TV movie or miniseries and for the second year in a row Davis won outstanding performance by an actress in a drama series.
In light of the controversy, it was revealed the Academy would take additional steps to reshape its membership. None of the winners Saturday night mentioned the controversy.
