Idris Elba Stars in Fashion Documentary
'Cut From a Different Cloth' chronicles the actor's experience collaborating with Superdry.
In 2016 alone, Idris Elba racked up two SAG Awards and one Independent Spirit Award for his roles in Beasts of No Nation and Luther. But for his next gig, the superstar plays a character a little closer to home: himself.
The actor stars in a fashion documentary (produced by Woodcut Media and his own Green Door pictures) about his collaboration with U.K.-based brand Superdry; the film debuted this week at MipTV in Cannes. The Idris Elba + Superdry collab, which was announced in June of last year and launched in November, is the brand's first and only celebrity collection.
But Elba's range for Superdry goes beyond the typical celebrity capsule. The British actor worked with founders James Holder and Julian Dunkerton to create a premium, 250-piece menswear offering, which includes tailored outerwear, knitwear, trousers, underwear and a collection of accessories ranging from beanies to belts.
The hourlong documentary, titled Cut From a Different Cloth, puts Elba in a league with such fashion industry legends as Raf Simons and Valentino Garavani as designers who have chronicled their creative processes on film.
The 43-year-old actor has been named to quite a few best-dressed lists over the years, but despite his sartorial renown, the recent collab was Elba's first. Said the actor at the time of the release, "Having the opportunity to collaborate on a clothing range has been an amazing experience, and I’m confident that my personal style combined with Superdry’s entrepreneurial spirit will be one to watch!”
