IFC Developing Series Based on Comedian Chris Gethard's 'Bad Idea' Book

The network has ordered a pilot script of the project.

IFC is developing a series based on comedian Chris Gethard's book, A Bad Idea I’m About To Do: True Tales of Seriously Poor Judgment and Stunningly Awkward Adventure.

In an announcement Monday, the network said it had ordered a pilot script of the project and also tapped Gethard as the first recruit for an "Adopt-a-Comic" program spotlighting talent with IFC sensibilities.

Gethard's duties as adoptee will include hosting on-air programming and creating content for IFC's website; in addition to a possible series, IFC will feature his stand-up act, podcast and New York-based cable access show, The Chris Gethard Show, with cross-platform promotion via TV, the web and live events.

"When I told my parents I was being adopted by a television station, they said ‘Why do you need to be adopted? You are 32 years old. We gave you a pretty good, easy suburban life,'" cracks Gethard in a statement. "They don't get how much of an opportunity it is for me that a hip cable network wants to raise me like a human baby.”

Gethard, whose Bad Idea memoir chronicles his youthful adventures as a nerd, makes appearances in the 2013 films Iron Man 3 and The Heat, co-starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.
