IFC Films Acquires 'The Man Who Knew Infinity'

Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons star in the biopic about Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

IFC FIlms has acquired domestic rights to The Man Who Knew Infinity, starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons.

Patel plays Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose contributions to number theory, continued fractions and infinite series revolutionized the field. Devika Bhise, Stephen Fry and Toby Jones also star in the biopic.

Matthew Brown wrote and directed the film, based on Robert Kanigel’s biography The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan, which premiered at TIFF on Sept. 17, as a part of the Gala Presentations section.

The film was produced by Edward R. Pressman, Jim Young, Joe Thomas, Sofia Sondervan, Jon Katz and Brown and was executive produced by Swati Bhise, Joseph N. Cohen, Gary Ellis, Pamela Godfrey, Phil Hunt, Mark Montgomery, Compton Ross, Manraj S. Sekhon, Shail Shah, Tristine Skyler, Min-Li Tan, Masaaki Tanaka and Richard Toussaint.

In her TIFF review, THR's Deborah Young wrote, "It’s hard to make numbers sexy, especially on screen, but the life of Indian mathematics genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, who revolutionized the field in the early 20th century, was an extraordinary story waiting to be told."

The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, senior vp acquisitions from Sundance Selects/IFC Films, with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers. Mister Smith handled international sales.
