Imax to Launch 'Divergent' Sequel Internationally on March 18
The overseas rollout comes two days before the domestic release on March 20.
Imax will release The Divergent Series: Insurgent on its super-sized screens in international territories starting on March 18, two days before the domestic rollout.
Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment label earlier announced a North American 3D and 2D release for Insurgent on March 20. The second installment of the Divergent franchise from Summit Entertainment will be digitally remastered by Imax for the global rollout.
"After the success of the first Divergent, along with the global hit phenomena of The Hunger Games and Twilight, Lionsgate and Summit continue to prove that they are at the forefront of adapting novels for the worldwide cinema," Greg Foster, senior executive vp of Imax Corp. and CEO of Imax Entertainment, said in a statement Thursday.
The second installment continues to follow Tris (Shailene Woodley), who is now searching for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris and Four (Theo James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris' family members sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them.
The film, based on author Veronica Roth's best-selling novel of the same name, also stars Octavia Spencer, Ansel Elgort, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q and Mekhi Phifer. Robert Schwentke directs from a screenplay by Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldsman and Mark Bomback.
Pouya Shahbazian is producing, while Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman are executive producing alongside Neil Burger and Barry Waldman.
