Imax to play 'Resident Evil' 3D pic

'Afterlife' will show simultaneous with its Sept. 10 release

TORONTO -- Imax added another 3D movie to its 2010 dance card Wednesday by booking Sony Pictures Releasing's "Resident Evil: Afterlife" for a Sept. 10 release on its supersized screens, simultaneous with its conventional theater release.

The Paul W.S. Anderson sci-fi thriller, which stars Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Kim Coates and Wentworth Miller, is the fourth installment of the video game-to-big screen franchise.

The picture was shot in and around Toronto in 2009 and will be digitally remastered before landing on Imax screens.

"In 3D, fans of 'Resident Evil' will have a whole new way to enjoy this next exciting chapter, and we're delighted that audiences will also have the opportunity to experience the film in Imax 3D at digital Imax locations, where they will feel like they are virtually in the movie," Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony Pictures Releasing, said in a statement.

Imax's 2010 film slate includes upcoming 3D releases like DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek Forever After 3D," Walt Disney Pictures' "Toy Story 3 3D" and "Tron Legacy 3D" and from Warner Bros. Pictures "Legends of the Guardian: The Owls of Ga'hoole 3D" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 3D."
