Imax Sells Two Digital Screens to Cinema 21 in Indonesia
The first commercial theater from the Canadian giant screen exhibitor will open in south Jakarta in May 2012, with a second to follow by 2013.
TORONTO - Indonesian exhibitor Cinema 21 has struck a deal to install two digital Imax theatres in Jakarta.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Cinema 21 will put the first super-sized screen in a flagship complex in Gandaria City, south Jakarta, in May 2012, followed another cross-town commercial Imax theater to open by 2013.
The Indonesia deal is the latest sign of an international network expansion at Toronto-based Imax, as it diversifies from a maturing North American exhibition market.
Pointing to 36 percent of Indonesia’s population being 15 to 40 years-old, Imax anticipates strong local demand for Hollywood blockbuster movies on its giant screens in that Asian market.
Cinema 21 operates 571 cinema screens across Indonesia under the Cinema XXI, Cinema 21 and The Premiere brands.
