Imax signs Singapore digital theatre
With Shaw Theatres to anchor renovation of the Lido CineplexTORONTO -- Giant screen exhibitor Imax Corp. has sold a digital theatre to Singaporean chain Shaw Theatres to anchor an ongoing renovation of the Lido Cineplex in downtown Singapore.
Shaw, which has operated cinemas in Singapore since 1927, is upgrading the Lido Complex from eight screens to 11, and plans a spring 2011 re-launch.
The Shaw Theatres deal comes as Toronto-based Imax continues to targets Asia as a growth market as the North American exhibition market continues to mature.
Imax earlier this month pacted with Korean chain CJ CGV Co. to install up to 15 joint venture digital theatre systems, starting later this year (HR, March 11).
And Imax partnered with China's Huayi Bros. studio to release three Chinese language commercial movies, starting with "Aftershock" this summer.
