Independent Spirit Awards: '12 Years a Slave' Named Best Feature

"12 Years a Slave" won five awards, including best feature.

The awards were handed out Saturday on the beach in Santa Monica...

12 Years a Slave was the big winner at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which were handed out Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica.

The movie won beat feature along with best director for Steve McQueen, best supporting female for Lupita Nyong'o, best screenplay for John Ridley and best cinematography for Sean Bobbit. The movie also is nominated for a total of nine Oscars at Sunday's ceremony, trailing American Hustle and Gravity, which have 10 noms apiece.

Other big winners included Dallas Buyers Club, with Matthew McConaughey taking home the trophy for best lead male and Jared Leto named best supporting male.

Cate Blanchett was named best lead female for Blue Jasmine.

The ceremony, which took place in a tent on the beach, was hosted by Patton Oswalt and will be telecast on IFC at 10 p.m. PT/ET on Saturday night.
