India focus for Canadian Music Week

Conference runs March 10-14 in Toronto

TORONTO -- With India's music industry closely tied to Bollywood and an expanding Internet and mobile phone generation, the Canadian Music Week conference has invited top Mumbai recorded music executives to Toronto next month for an Indian spotlight.

CMW president Neill Dixon said Indian music talent and industry execs will meet with their Canadian counterparts from March 10 to 13 to discuss possible business partnerships and licensing, Canadian concert touring, sponsorship, publishing and mobile music.

Dixon added Canada has a growing Indo-Canadian community from which homegrown music artists are eyeing opportunities in India.

"India is already a huge market, but it's the young people that are experimenting with music and on the Internet, and they're really the new educated middle class that will be a huge potential market for Canadians," he argued.

Indian talent and execs to attend Canada's international music convention include Dhruv Ghanekar and Ashutosh Pathak of Blue Frog Media, Saregama India vp Atul Churamani, DadA Music India business head Anand Kanwar and Neeraj Roy, CEO of Hungama Digital Media Entertainment.

The CMW's India focus follows last year's spotlight on China as the symposium looks to open emerging markets for Canadian music talent.
