Indian Exhibition Giant PVR Opens Second Imax Theater
"Man of Steel” is the first title to screen at the new giant-format movie house in Mumbai.
India's largest theatrical chain, PVR, and Imax have co-launched a new cinema in Mumbai, their second in the country after last year's debut of an Imax theater in Bangalore.
Bollywood star Aamir Khan graced the Mumbai ribbon-cutting along with PVR managing director Ajay Bijli, PVR joint managing director Sanjeev Kumar Bijli and Imax senior vp and managing director of Asia Pacific Don Savant, among other dignitaries.
The event included a private screening of the Imax version of Warner Bros.' Man of Steel.
“Mumbai has always symbolized the significance and magnitude of cinematic experiences. Bringing the second Imax theater, after Bangalore, was indeed a planned step to offer the finest cinematic experience to discerning moviegoers,” said Ajay Bijli.
"We are also committed to presenting the best in Bollywood films in Imax. With our three-film partnership with [veteran Bollywood banner] Yash Raj Films, we are delivering on this promise and look forward to bringing the legendary studio's most anticipated movies to fans in our premium format,” added Savant.
The first Imax version of a Bollywood film will be Yash Raj Film's upcoming Dhoom 3, the latest installment of the hit action franchise starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan and actress Katrina Kaif.
Following its acquisition of rival Mumbai-based chain Cinemax early this year, PVR currently operates a cinema circuit consisting of 365 screens in 86 cinemas in 36 cities nationwide.
