Indie Producer Datari Turner Signs First-Look Deal With Codeblack Films
He produced Sundance hit 'LUV' and dark comedy 'It's a Disaster'
Lionsgate’s Codeblack Films has entered a first-look deal with indie producer Datari Turner, the company announced Wednesday.
Codeblack will have all distribution rights to Turner’s microbudget film productions in the U.S. and Canada under the new agreement, and Turner will produce all films through his Datari Turner Productions banner.
Turner has produced a variety of films in recent years, including Sundance hit LUV starring Common and Danny Glover; dark comedy It’s a Disaster with Julia Stiles and America Ferrera; comedy Dysfunctional Friends; Meagan Good-starrer Video Girl; and James Franco drama About Cherry.
“Datari has quickly established himself as a prolific producer with a keen ability to make powerful films that connect with moviegoers,” said Codeblack Films president Jeff Clanagan. “The Codeblack family is proud to work with him as part of our goal of empowering filmmakers who create quality movies that showcase diversity for an often underserved multicultural audience.”
The agreement was negotiated by Codeblack Films executive vp and general manager Quincy Newell, Lionsgate executive vp business and legal affairs Jean Chi and executive Greg Snodgrass of Business Affairs Inc. CAA reps Turner.
