Report: 'Innocence of Muslims' Helmed by 1970s Softcore Director Alan Roberts
Roberts' credits include "The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood" and "Karate Cop."
In the latest twist to the Innocence of Muslims saga -- the amateurishly made anti-Islamic film that set off anti-U.S. riots worldwide that claimed the life of Ambassador Christopher Stevens -- several websites are claiming the director listed in the film credits as Alan Roberts is the same Alan Roberts who helmed a number of low-budget films throughout the '70s, '80s and '90s.
IMDb lists Roberts' credits, which include softcore sexploitation fare like The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood (1980) and Young Lady Chatterley (1977), the action movie Karate Cop (1991) and the erotic thriller Save Me (1994), starring Harry Hamlin.
Q&A: 'Innocence of Muslims' Actress: Director 'Will Stand Before God for What He Has Done'
The 65-year-old Roberts was listed as director in casting sheets in the summer of 2011 for the film, then titled Desert Warriors. As reported by Gawker.com's Adrian Chen, the producer known as Sam Bacile -- the mastermind behind the project, now thought to be Nakoula Basseley Nakoula -- personally hired Roberts, according to several acquaintances and individuals associated with the production.
A business partner of Roberts tells Gawker that Roberts was unaware that Bacile would later redub the actors' lines -- for example, replacing the name "Master George" with "Muhammad," as one cast member, Cindy Lee Garcia, recently revealed to the The Hollywood Reporter.

"They redubbed it, they brought in the actors, put in new sounds, changed the names. And this was done later, before it was initially released. Of course Alan had nothing to do with it," the business partner tells Gawker.
Attempts at contacting Roberts have proved unsuccessful. A phone number provided on Roberts' IMDb page belongs to a woman who says she has no connection to the director, despite being flooded with inquiries.
Adding to the intrigue, Vice cites "anonymously furnished" pre-production invoices for Desert Warrior bearing the name Robert Brownell. Vice reports that the documents also include Brownell’s address in Tarzana, California, his phone number, and “contact information" that lists the name Alan Roberts. A Nexis public records search also indicates that an Alan Roberts of Santa Monica is an alias for a 65-year-old man named Robert Alan Brownell of Canyon Lake in Riverside County.

Meanwhile, Innocence of Muslims-incited outrage and violence continues to spread, with rioting erupting in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Sudan, Lebanon, and now reports of clashes with police in Australia.
