Internet Abuzz as Hillary Clinton Sends Out First Tweet
At 9:44 am PST, Hillary Clinton sent out her first tweet, immediately setting the Internet abuzz: Is this her foray into the 2016 presidential race?
Her Twitter debut was hip and — if her first hour was any indication — quite successful. Within minutes, the former secretary of state, U.S. Senator and first lady had 24,000 followers and more than 1,000 retweets.
Her first message riffed on a wildly popular Tumblr page portraying her sending text messages from a plane: “Thanks for the inspiration@ASmith83 & @Sllambe,” she tweeted, “I'll take it from here... #tweetsfromhillary."
Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe, two political activists, became an Internet sensation with their Tumblr page portraying Clinton in sunglasses texting from her seat on a military transport jet.
Clinton, using a placeholder account set up months ago, described herself as “a Wife, mom, lawyer, women & kids advocate, FLOAR, FLOTUS, US Senator, SecState, author, dog owner, hair icon, pantsuit aficionado, glass ceiling cracker, TBD...”
Twitter, of course, is more than just an American phenomenon, having become a kind of cyber lingua franca around the globe and playing a key role in everything from the Arab Spring to the recent popular protests in Turkey.
It will surprise few that Clinton said she's now following Bill Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative and Chelsea Clinton, “Advocate for a more healthy, equitable, safe world + all things@ClintonFdn / @NBCNews Special Correspondent / New Yorker / Wife and daughter, mom to Soren.”
