Box Office Milestone: 'Intouchables' Top Grossing Foreign Film of 2012 in North America

Continung its dazzling run, French comedy The Intouchables has now grossed $7.11 million in the U.S. and Canada to become the top grossing foreign-language film of the year.

The Weinstein Co., which is distributing the movie in North America, touted the milestone on Tuesday as it prepares to expand Intouchables nationwide on July 27.

Directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, Intouchables opened in the U.S. over Memorial Day weekend in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. It's currenly playing in 91 locations.

Intouchables has grossed a massive $365.1 million at the worldwide box office, shattering records and becoming the top independent title of the year. Yet it faced an inherent challenge at the domestic box office, considering Americans aren't so crazy about subtitles.

"The best part about the film’s success is the fact that a foreign language film is getting its fair turn in the spotlight in this industry. It is movies like this that help us continue to bring smart, entertaining and well-written films that break the mold to theaters everywhere," TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said.

Intouchables -- Starring Francois Cluzet and Omar Sy -- earned a massive $166.1 million (the third highest gross of all time) in France and is the highest grossing French film in Germany ($75.4 million).

"Breaking this record shows that our worlds are not so far apart. A true story about friendship touches international and American audiences alike."
