To say that Ty Hunter is rad would be the understatement of the year. The Houston-bred stylist -- who lives in Harlem -- started working with Destiny's Child when, uh, there was still such a thing as Destiny's Child. And he's now responsible not only for the creative direction of Beyonce's video and performance ensembles (sparkly Saint Laurent tights, included), but her personal ones too (remember that white Michael Costello number she wore to the Grammys? You can thank Ty for that).
We caught up with Hunter in the front row of Naeem Khan's stunning, shine-heavy fall '14 show Tuesday (where he hung out with fellow music styling master June Ambrose as Padma Lakshmi, Teen Wolf star Holland Roden and Disney darling Debby Ryan kicked it nearby) to find out how the man responsible for dressing the woman whose outfit selfies reach 10,000,000 Instagram followers does fashion week.
Pret-a-Reporter: Your fashion week must be pretty intense. What shows have you seen so far?
Ty Hunter: Dennis Basso, Vera Wang, Michael Costello (smiles, winks). DVF, too.
And? What's the verdict on what you've seen?
Vera Wang today was awesome. Everything. And Dennis, too -- I loved the furs. I'm really surprised. Everything's been looking really lovely. I've been finding at least 3 to 4 looks at each show, which is really unheard of.
We can only assume that your version of "work" at a fashion show is very different from the social media-making, interview note taking and trend spotting that constitutes ours. What does a fashion show agenda look like for you?
Well this is a new thing I'm doing, I'm taking over New York Magazine's Instagram. So I've been taking pictures. I never take pictures. I always wait and go to Style.com. I normally just sit there and go "la la la" (smiles). But taking pictures is kind of cool. I'm gonna start doing that more often.
You'll have to give us tips. Will you be in L.A. for any Oscars festivities?
No, we're heading back on tour on [Feb.] 16th in the UK and we'll be gone for a month.
Does this mean that the world will have a whole new set of Beyonce costumes/outfits/everything to stalk, er, pay attention to every day?
The new album is going to be affiliated with [the tour leg]. And most of the designers we've already used on the tour are revamping their looks. So they'll be some new costumes for sure. It will be exciting!
