Ischia Global Film and Music Festival Sets Whitney Houston Retrospective

The Italian fest will fete the late pop star with a screening of a Lifetime biopic and a selection of her films, including 'The Bodyguard.'

July’s Ischia Global Film and Music Festival will be dedicated to the life of late music star Whitney Houston.

A special screening of the Lifetime biopic Whitney will lead the commemoration, playing on July 11, one night before the Italian festival’s opening.

Whitney marks Angela Bassett’s directorial debut. The film details the tumultuous relationship of Houston (Yaya DaCosta) and Bobby Brown (Arlen Escarpeta).

A selection of Houston's films will then be screened throughout the festival, including The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale, The Preacher’s Wife and Sparkle.

Her hit “I Will Always Love You,” from The Bodyguard, earned her two Grammy awards for best record of the year and best pop vocal performance.

Houston died on February 11, 2012 after accidentally drowning in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The official coroner's report listed the effects of heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors to her death.

Ischia’s honorary chair, Mark Canton, said of the tribute: “Her voice, her music, her mere presence on the air or on the screen made Whitney Houston an icon of the ages. She is missed. Her talent lives on, not only at Ischia but throughout the world as well.”

The Ischia Global Film and Music Fest runs July 12-19 off the coast of Naples.

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos will receive the Ischia Global Legend Award. Other guests include Dante Ferretti, Sandy Powell, Paul Haggis, Bille August, Franco Nero and Lina Wertmuller.
