James Franco, Anne Hathaway Didn’t Take ‘Charge’ at Oscars, Says Whoopi Goldberg
The former host says the two weren't able to "surf" well through Sunday's Academy Awards.
Oscar winner (and former host) Whoopi Goldberg agrees with THR's Tim Goodman and other critics: Anne Hathaway and James Franco missed their mark Sunday night as hosts of the 83rd annual Academy Awards.
"You've got to get people who understand a live show," she said on ABC's The View Monday, notes USA Today. "The first few minutes of that show is yours. You have to recognize two things. You have to recognize - like after Melissa Leo said that word - ... when things happen like that you have to be able to come and lift the audience out of their shock and move the show forward. I felt like last night there was no one in charge.
"I like James Franco a lot. I like Anne Hathaway a lot," she went on. "But this is a show that, it's on you to keep it going. It's on you. You have to be able to surf in this show. And I didn't think they surfed as much as they could have."
Early ratings from Sunday's show reveal a slight decline from last year's awards show.
