James, Gregory to headline 'Shrek' on stage

NEW YORK -- Tony nominee Brian d'Arcy James and Chester Gregory II will lead the cast of DreamWorks' Broadway-bound show "Shrek the Musical," set to premiere in Seattle in August.

James ("Sweet Smell of Success") will play the titular green ogre, with Gregory ("Cry-Baby," "Hairspray") as his sidekick, Donkey. John Tartaglia ("Beauty and the Beast," "Avenue Q") has been cast as Pinocchio.

As previously announced, Tony winner Sutton Foster ("Thoroughly Modern Millie") will appear as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber ("Spamalot") will play Lord Farquaad and Kecia Lewis-Evans ("The Drowsy Chaperone") has been cast as the Dragon.

Additional casting will be announced soon.

"Shrek," DreamWorks Animation's first venture in legitimate theater, will be directed by Jason Moore ("Avenue Q"), with book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire ("Rabbit Hole") and music by Jeanine Tesori.

The musical will play the 5th Avenue Theatre on Aug. 14-Sept. 21 in Seattle before opening on Broadway Dec. 14.
