James Murdoch second on under 40 pay list

Tech leaders top Fortune list of young movers, shakers.

NEW YORK - Fortune on Thursday unveiled its list of the top 40 executives under the age of 40, which is dominated by technology leaders.

Tech heavyweights include venture capitalist and Netscape founder Marc Andreessen in the top spot, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is steady at number two, followed by third-ranked Twitter founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone and Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page who came in fifth after heading up the list last year.

The highest-ranked entertainment executive is News Corp. Europe and Asia boss James Murdoch, even though he is down from last year's third spot. "As the only one of Rupert Murdoch's adult children in an executive role at News Corp., James has built his own identity while remaining close to his father," Fortune argued.

Also high up in the 12th spot is Univision Communications' Cesar Conde, president of Univision Networks, who gained one spot this year. AOL CEO Tim Armstrong ranks 18th, but is down from last year, and the Miami Heat's LeBron James debuts on the list in the 20th spot.

Meanwhile, Murdoch son James once again ranks highly on Fortune's list of the 20 highest-paid executives under 40. Just as last year, he is second with total 2009 compensation of $8.8 million, outdone again only by Wynn Resorts CFO Matt Maddox with $15 million. Both saw slight compensation declines from $10.1 million and $17.7 million in 2008, respectively.

Another entertainment name on the top 20 pay list is Jason Garner, Live Nation's CEO of global music who took the 13th spot with $2.7 million in compensation, up from 15th last year.
