Jane Fonda to Host Comedy Event for Women's Equality, ERA
Sasheer Zamata, Judah Friedlander and Wyatt Cenac are all set to perform.
Jane Fonda is set to emcee a comedy show in New York to raise awareness of women's issues, including pay inequality.
The veteran actress, who also is a member of the Equal Rights Amendment Coalition advisory council, will host "A Night of Comedy With Jane Fonda," presented by the Fund for Women's Equality and the ERA Coalition, at New York's Caroline's on Broadway.
The Feb. 7 event will feature comedy performances from Judah Friedlander, Saturday Night Live's Sasheer Zamata, Daily Show alum Wyatt Cenac, Michelle Buteau, Gina Brillon and others.
"Growing up in the business, I have always felt it is important to use my voice and stand with my colleagues and friends to support women's rights and equality," Fonda said Thursday in a statement. "We hope to use the magic of comedy to help raise awareness of pay inequity, pregnancy discrimination and violence against women and to help promote constitutional equality for women.”
Jessica Neuwirth, president and director of the fund for Women’s Equality and its sister organization the ERA Coalition, added: “80 percent of Americans think women already have equal rights under the law — 95 percent of all Americans think we should, but the fact is that we don’t. The Equal Rights Amendment would put women in the Constitution once and for all. We are grateful to Jane Fonda and all of the performing comedians for giving their time and talent to our cause, and we very much welcome laughter that will help us move the campaign forward.”
Supporters of women's rights and equality, including Gloria Steinem, will also be on hand for the inaugural event, which is being produced by writer, filmmaker and activist Agunda Okeyo.
The Fund for Women's Equality works to raise awareness of the unequal treatment of women in the U.S., and the ERA Coalition is working to guarantee equal rights for women under the Constitution by campaigning for the Equal Rights Amendment. Steinem is on the board of both organizations, which were founded in 2014, and the following stars have all supported the ERA Coalition: Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Chelsea Handler, Rashida Jones, Robin Wright, Sam Waterston and Christine Lahti.
