Japan Box Office: 'Batman v. Superman' Climbs to Second on Third Weekend
'Assassination Classroom: Graduation' remained on top, while anime 'Doraemon' and 'Batman v Superman' swapped the No. 2 and 3 spots from last weekend.
Assassination Classroom: Graduation, Doraemon and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice occupied the top three spots at Japan's weekend box office for the third consecutive weekend, with DC's heroes and the local "cat-type robot" changing places at No. 2 and 3.
Live-action manga adaptation Assassination Classroom took another $1.9 million (¥211 million) over the weekend to stay on top of the rankings.
BvS pulled in $1.3 million (¥146 million) from 90,000 admissions on Saturday and Sunday to take its total to $12.8 million. Higher prices for 3D and 4DX screenings pushed its weekend take above Doraemon's.
Doraemon, the latest installment in the massively successful manga, TV anime and big-screen franchise, took in another $1.1 million from 97,000 on its sixth weekend in theaters. Local rankings go by admission numbers rather than box office gross, putting Doraemon above BvS and leaving the top three unchanged.
Room, featuring a best actress Academy Award-winning performance by Brie Larson, opened on a limited release 76 screens from distributor Gaga but managed to take $530,000 from 38,000 admissions to put it at No. 8 on the rankings, the only new entry this week.
Best picture and screenplay Academy Award winner Spotlight opens on Friday.
