Japan Box Office: 'Fury' Opens in Second Spot
The manga adaptation 'Parayste' takes the weekend with a $2.9 million opening
David Ayer's Fury opened with $1.7 million (￥210 million) from 156,000 admissions at 332 screens in Japan this weekend, coming in second place behind Parayste from Takashi Yamazaki.
The live-action manga adaptation that closed this year's Tokyo International Film Festival at the end of October took $2.9 million (￥340 million) from 256,000 admissions at 418 screens. It is the first of two films based on the popular manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki. The second part is due for release next year.
Fury, which is one of the films stolen by hackers from Sony Pictures over the weekend and uploaded to the Internet, had a solid opening after Brad Pitt made his 10th promotional visit to Japan last month alongside co-star Logan Lerman.
Interstellar dropped to the third spot in Japan after its bow at No. 1 over the previous weekend's three-day frame, adding another $1.1 million to its box-office revenue in the country.
