Japan Box Office: 'The Intern' Rises to Second Spot

Local film 'Library Wars – The Last Mission' stays on top as Keanu Reeves' promo visit to Japan fails to boost the fortunes of 'John Wick' after it is finally released a year after it bowed in the U.S.

The Intern jumped one spot into the number two position during its second weekend in Japanese theaters, adding $1.27 million (152 million) to take its local total to $5 million (596 million).

Distributed by Warner Japan, the Anne Hathaway-Robert De Niro comedy (retitled locally as My Intern) climbed to the top of the South Korean box office earlier this month after bowing in third.

Keanu Reeves-starrer John Wick made just $656,000 (79 million) to put it in the fifth spot in Japan this weekend, taking a total of $877,000 (105 million) including its Friday opening, which came a year after its stateside bow. Reeves remains popular in Japan and visited the country this month on a promo tour, appearing on Japanese TV, where he met one of his heroes, action star Sonny Chiba (Kill Bill: Volume 2).

Local sequel Library Wars – The Last Mission, the follow-up to Shinsuke Sato's 2013 tale of a future Japan where books are banned, stayed on top for a second weekend, racking up a total of $7.2 million (856 million).

Fantastic Four fell to 10th after bowing in the sixth spot last weekend, registering a total of $2.1 million (250 million) at the Japanese box office.

A busy schedule next weekend will see Japan releases for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, the previous installment of which failed to light up the local box office, M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit and The Transporter Refueled.
