Local sci-fi comedy 'Galaxy Turnpike' opens on top, while Keanu Reeves-starrer 'John Wick' falls to 10th place in its second weekend, failing to cross $2 million.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opened in the fifth spot of the weekend rankings of the Japanese box office, bringing in $1.2 million (146 million), including its Friday opening and $900,000 (109 million) on Saturday and Sunday alone.

Japanese sci-fi comedy Galaxy Turnpike (Galaxy Kaido), written and directed by Koki Mitani, bowed at number one with $2.2 million (270 million) on Saturday and Sunday.

The Intern spent its third weekend in Japanese theaters and in the top three, taking its total in the market to $7.7 million (925 million) from 695,000 tickets sold. The Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro comedy fell one spot to third after jumping to second last weekend.

The Transporter Refueled, released in Japan as Transporter Ignition, opened in the sixth spot with $795,000 (96 million).

John Wick fell to 10th on the charts in its second weekend, taking a total of $1.8 million (219 million) from 158,000 admissions so far at the Japanese box office. The film stars Keanu Reeves.

Next weekend will see the release of Joe Wright's Pan. Warner Bros must be hoping that Halloween will get Japanese audiences in the mood for some costumed fun and help it recoup some of the losses the underperforming production is racking up.
