Micaela Erlanger, who also styles Lupita Nyong'o and Common, says of Leto's outfit: "Alessandro designed this look with the flower in mind, and it was just a matter of the right combination."

There is currently no designer hotter than Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, whose creations for the Italian fashion house are both maximalist in their embellishment and flourishes and progressive in their gender fluidity (he sends both male and female models down the runway wearing feminine yet unisex creations).

So it was no surprise when Jared Leto showed up on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night wearing Gucci — and with the designer as his date. The star, who won best supporting actor honors in 2014 for his gender-bending role in Dallas Buyers Club, is known for taking sartorial risks and has worn everything from red bow ties to sequined lapels, plus a powder-blue Givenchy tuxedo to last year’s awards.

This year, the actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman chose a tailored black suit with red piping and accented it with a floral pin from Gucci’s cruise 2016 show. "Gucci had so much fantasy in the collection, and flowers were a theme that was carried through," says Leto’s stylist Micaela Erlanger. "Alessandro designed this look with the flower in mind, and it was just a matter of the right combination."

During the red-carpet show, Erlanger posted an Instagram video of dozens of fabric flower pins from the brand. Some have been calling the look an ode to Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw, who frequently wore a carnation pin affixed to her shoulder. It wasn’t Leto’s only statement accessory, though: In addition to a Bulgari watch, he wore a pair of Gucci’s velvet loafers with giant rhinestone snakes on them.

Erlanger also alluded to the actor wearing more of the designer on future red carpets. "The relationship between Jared and Gucci is a very natural and organic one. Jared has a sense of style that is very much complemented by Alessandro’s aesthetic," she explains. We’re calling it a match made in men’s fashion heaven.
